The pie was as advertised. Both rounds.

Uncle had gone back and talked to the older guy at the sporting goods store. He had provided Uncle with the road map and a larger topographic map that most hikers used to figure out what trails to take. Using the edge of the purple-blotched napkin, they decided to find some rooms and get an early start.

“This is a short nine miles to the top of the knee.” Alex frowned with a sour sneer.

Nash gently laid her hand on Uncle’s. She leaned into Alex as her eyes narrowed. “How many yards of scar tissue do you have on your body? And more importantly, how old are you?”

He shied, embarrassed. He knew where this was going. “Forty-four.”

Nash’s eyes squinted against the afternoon sun reflecting off a car’s window. But it enforced her position. “Feet, yards, or years?”

The voice was quiet. “Years.”

Her hand rolled out in the air as her finger pointed at Thomas. “Tommy’s the same age as I am. But he’s got more inches of scarring on just his back than you have in years. Only Uncle didn’t get blown up in Colorado. My days of hiking twenty in a day are a lifetime behind me. If you didn’t come prepared to spend some days on the trail, we’ll go back to the sporting goods store and buy you what you need. But I’m guessing Tommy and Uncle will want an intensive rub-out by the time we get to this overlook. We’ll camp there and search the knee in the morning. If we get lucky and find the nest early, we might think about coming out then. Nobody is a pansy in this group. But some of us aren’t spring chickens anymore, either.” She held his gaze.

Alex swallowed slowly. “I didn’t mean to offend. It’s just…”

“What? A stroll in the park? Have you hiked this trail?”

“I have.”

They turned to look at the waitress.

The brunette slid the pencil into her hair, and the high ponytail pulled it tight. “In high school. I dated a guy working with the Forest Service. He was part of the Conservation Corps. That summer, I helped rebuild those trails.” She pointed at a place along the trail easily overlooked. “If you missed those four parallel lines, it’s not a misprint. Those switchbacks are going to kick your ass. In a mile, you climb three hundred feet or more. Don’t have lunch until you get to the top. Besides, the view of the lake will take your breath away.”

Nash swiveled and hung her arm over the back of her chair. “Any other surprises?”

The woman pointed at Nash’s cowboy boots. “Your feet will hate you for those city boots by the first rise. But going out and buying new hiking boots? Even more stupid. It’s better to get a pair of cross-trainers or tennis shoes. They’ll be broken in by the second mile. And take plenty of water. Your dog will need twice as much as you do. The lake’s right there, but getting down for water’s a bitch.
